Explosion hits Bilibid's Maximum Security Compound

An explosion hit the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City Friday morning.

The Metro Manila police said an improvised explosive device went off in Quadrant 4 at around 10:00 a.m., while demolition operations were ongoing to clear Quadrant 1 of shelters or kubol.

Police said Quadrant 4 is where convicted extremist offenders are detained, including members of terrorist groups Abu Sayyaf, Maute, Rajah Solaiman, and Jemaah Islamiyah.

Some convicted members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the former rebel group that signed a peace deal with the government, are also there.

Police said no one was hurt from the incident.

Authorities admit there was a major security breach. Two hand grenades and two blasting caps were also recovered from the inmates' shelters.

“Yung pag trigger nun ang ating iniimbestigahan. Pwedeng ito ay pinain para sa mga personnel natin na nagsasagawa ng demolition ng mga illegal structures," said Major General Guillermo Eleazar, outgoing National Capital Regional Police Office Regional Director.
