Giant Clams Worth ₱36-Million Confiscated


During a joint operation by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), P36M worth of giant clams were seized in Cordova, Cebu.

The giant clams were confiscated in two barangays in the town of Cordova on Wednesday. The clams were intercepted by the authorities which led to the capture of three suspects.

The suspects were identified to be George Oldama, Bebeng Oldama, and Rowena Tahanlangit. According to Lawyer Tomas Enrile, each giant clam could be sold at a range of P18,000 to P20,000 per kilo.


He also added that they have been vigilant about these kinds of illegal businesses in Cordova for a couple of months now. The possession of giants clams is punishable by law.

According to a report by Inquirer, BFAR-7 emphasized that the owning or selling of giant clams is a violation of the Republic Act 10654 or an “Act to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.


These clams are also under the protection of international policies. The BFAR also urged the public to immediately report any individual in possession of these giant clams.

The clams are currently being held by the BFAR7. Their director, Alfeo Piloton also encouraged the public to stay vigilant and alert authorities if they catch someone buying or these clams.


Reports say that Enrile had already filed charges against the suspects at the Cebu Provincial Prosecutor’s Office. The clams were also said to be “fossilized”.

However, before being fossilized, the clams still need to undergo carbon dating. This is needed for documenting purposes, as well as knowing the age of the clams.
