Gordon supports Duterte decision

Letting the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to take over the probe into the killing of Clarin, Misamis Occidental Mayor David Navarro will assure the public that the investigation would be fair and neutral, Senator Richard Gordon said Wednesday.

The senator noted he backs the President’s decision.

“I support the President for investigating the police through NBI so that there would be fairness and neutrality. People have to be assured that police followed rules and did not violate law,” Gordon said in a statement.

Navarro, who was on the government’s “narcolist,” was killed in an ambush in Cebu City on Friday, October 25, while he was being transported to the City Prosecutor’s Office. The gunmen fled the scene.

The ambush took place a day after Navarro was arrested for allegedly punching a massage therapist and asking one of the female employees to perform lewd acts.

Duterte has ordered the Philippine National Police to stop the probe into Navarro’s death and turn over the documents and evidence to the NBI.

“PNP, anong ginawa ng PNP? Baka sila ang pumatay, sila ‘yung malapit,” he said.

Gordon also reiterated his support to transform the Internal Affairs Service (IAS) into an independent institution.

“The IAS should be separated from the PNP to track down police conduct as there should always be due process and to avoid the giving of favors to erring policemen. No one should be above the law. It is high time to strengthen the IAS,” he said.

Gordon, chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon and the Justice and Human Rights Committees, earlier released the draft report on the ‘ninja cops.’ He said that resigned PNP chief Oscar Albayalde could be held liable for the acts of his former men. —Amita Legaspi/VDS, GMA News
