Unbearable back pain caused by muscle spasms – Go

President Rodrigo Duterte was advised to rest and take medicines for “muscle spasms,” the cause of the unbearable spinal pain that hounded him in Japan, forcing him to cut short his visit, Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go said.

Go, however, gave assurances that Duterte’s back pain was not a serious health concern.

“He is okay. No need to worry at muscle spasms daw po iyon (It was just muscle spasms),” he told reporters.

Go said the President consulted his neurosurgeons after visiting the wake of former Senate president Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr.

The senator added that Duterte underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.

“Nagpa-MRI po siya. At wala naman pong nakitang dapat ikabahala (He had an MRI. Doctors did not see anything serious),” he said.

“Sabi ng mga doktor niya, mga expert, ito ‘yung mga neurosurgeon na doctors niya before pa ay wala pong dapat ikabahala, purely muscle spasms lang po ‘yun (His doctors, these are experts, neurosurgeons, said there’s nothing to be worried about. It’s purely muscle spasms),” he added.

The President returned to Manila on Tuesday night after he complained of “unbearable pain in his spinal column” days after he figured in a motorcycle accident.

Go said the President was advised to take medication and rest for a few days.

“Binigyan lang po siya ng gamot, pain reliever…at kailangan po magpahinga ang Pangulo. He was advised to rest, rest, rest kailangan talaga (He was given pain relief medication…and he needs to rest. He was advised to rest. He really needs to rest),” he said.

The senator said he and others were worried that the motorcycle accident may have affected the President’s spine but tests yielded negative results.

“Ang ikinabahala namin at first kung tinamaan ang kanyang spine pero salamat sa Panginoon walang dapat ikabahala (We were worried at first that his spine could have been hit but thank God, there’s nothing to worry about),” Go said.

Early on Wednesday, Palace spokesman Salvador Panelo promised that Duterte would “inform our countrymen on the result of his medical consultation.”

“His consultation with a doctor is aimed at determining the medical condition of his body, as well as finding out whether his previous spinal injury from a past motorcycle accident has been aggravated by his recent fall,” Panelo said in a statement.

“The President shall inform our countrymen on the result of his medical consultation,” he added.

Duterte’s health has been the subject of much speculation, but the Chief Executive has repeatedly downplayed such concerns.

Section 12 of Article VII of the Constitution states, “In case of serious illness of the President, the public shall be informed of the state of his health.”

Last week, Duterte fell off his motorcycle inside the Malacañang complex. He sustained minor injuries — light bruises and scratches — to his elbow and knee.
Some world leaders, including Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, expressed concern over the President’s fall.

The accident did not stop the 74-year-old leader from fulfilling his public engagements, including his meeting with India’s President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday and witnessing the enthronement of Japan’s Emperor Naruhito in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Panelo said Duterte went straight to the wake of Pimentel at the Heritage Park in Taguig City upon landing in Manila at 10:33 p.m. Tuesday.

The President, accompanied by Go, was received by Lourdes “Bing” Pimentel, Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel 3rd and Commissioner of Human Rights’ Gwendolyn Pimentel-Gana.
