Philippine-grown Coffee from Sagada WIN International Awards in Milan

Coffee from Bukidnon and Sagada won international awards from Italy; bringing pride to the Philippines.

The Mirabueno Coffee from Bukidnon and the SGD Coffee from Northern Sagada have received the Gourmet and Bronze awards at the 5th International Contest of locally roasted coffees in Milan, Italy. The competition was organized by the Agency for the Valorization of Agricultural Products (AVPA).

According to a report, the win of the two local coffees had put the Philippines back in the world coffee map. The locally-grown coffee competed against around 700 producers from different countries around the world, including Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala, Ecuador, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Togo, Puerto Rico and Hawaii.

The Philippines has also won an award in the same competition in 2017 where the Bana’s Coffee bagged the Gourmet prize.

It was also reported that the Coffee Heritage Project (CHP), a non-profit initiative that aims to preserve the heritage of organic coffee, is the team behind the participation of Mirabueno Coffee and SGD Coffee in the competition which aims to give local coffee producers a chance to be recognized in the international level.

“We hope that with this recognition, we are able to highlight the Philippines coffee and the great work of Filipino coffee farmers like those behind Mirabueno Coffee and SGD Coffee, growing one of the finest coffees in the world to be the true artisan of the Philippines’ coffee industry,” Richard Watanabe, an official of the CHP, said.
