Why Duterte Chose Robredo to Lead War on Drugs

The drug czar offer to Vice President Leni Robredo demonstrates President Rodrigo Duterte’s openness to her suggestions on how to improve the government’s campaign against illegal drugs, Malacañang said.

In a memorandum dated October 31, Duterte designated Robredo as co-chairperson of the inter-agency committee against illegal drugs until June 2022. The anti-drug body, created through Executive Order 15, is mandated to ensure the effectiveness of drug-related operations and the arrest of high-value drug personalities.

“In offering and appointing VP Leni as Drug Czar, the President is simply being open to suggestions from a critic of the drug war,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Wednesday.

“(Duterte) believes that there is no better person who can implement such suggestions than the person making them,” he added.

Panelo, however, maintained that the President’s campaign to rid the country of illegal drugs is far from being a failure or ineffective as Robredo earlier claimed.

“The Duterte presidency has unearthed the magnitude and gravity of the drug menace and the Administration is vigorously addressing it, achieving results no previous administration was able to accomplish,” according to him.

Robredo has yet to accept the position, which carries a Cabinet rank.
