President Rodrigo Duterte will make an “important announcement” on the water concession deals on January 6, 2020, his spokesman said.

In a media briefing on Thursday, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Duterte still wanted to talk to those involved in the government’s “onerous” 1997 water concession agreements with Manila Water Company, Inc. and Maynilad Water Services, Inc.
“Last night, he repeated that he still wants to talk to those involved. The lawyers of the government, private lawyers. He said, ‘I still want to hear why they allowed this kind of treason against the interest of the Filipino people’,” Panelo told reporters.

“Sabi niya hindi sya papayag na walang mangyari sa kasong ito. Let’s wait. He said he will make an important announcement on January 6… regarding the water issue,” he added.
Duterte had threatened to file “economic sabotage” and economic plunder charges against the two water concessionaires and former government lawyers due to alleged irregular water deals.

He also warned a military takeover of the water distribution operations if he is not satisfied with the explanation of Manila Water and Maynilad.
