Expensive Pearl found in an Iloilo restaurant's grilled oyster

Pearls aren't just found inside expensive jewelry shops. On rare occasions, they're served inside a freshly grilled oyster.

In a Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho episode on Sunday, Raoul said he was just eating grilled oysters in a seafood restaurant in Iloilo, when he suddenly chewed on something hard.

"So pagkuha ko nang ganoon, itsura niya parang ngipin ko. Chineck ko ‘yung teeth ko kung complete pa, complete naman! " Raoul narrated.

“Parang pearl. And then one of our colleagues nagsabi siya, ‘Apat tayo dito, ikaw pa ang masuwerteng nakakain ng talaba, Raoul said.

Raoul immediately showed the pearl to his wife, Arlene, and she found it funny that Raoul almost ate a pearl.

The supervisor of the restaurant admitted that there are times when foreign objects are found in oysters they order from a farm in Aklan.

Since it wasn't new to them, the restaurant simply ignores these kinds of incidents. Customers, however, upon hearing Raoul's case, started taking a closer look at oysters they would order, hoping to find another pearl.

The farm in Aklan, after hearing the news, started doing the same. They said that they would actually see tiny pearls in their oysters but they didn't know if it had any value.

Real or not real?

To verify the authenticity of the pearl, Raoul showed it to his relative, Flord Calawag, a licensed Fisheries Technologist from Antique.

According to Flord, sand particles can enter oysters, just like in clams, which will then leave a pearl sac that soon turn into pearls.

Flord continued and said that if a light was directed at a real pearl, the light should pass through and if you bite a real pearl, it should feel rough on your teeth.

After analyzing the object that Raoul found, Flord said, "Ako 100% na, based on my experience in dealing with pearls na it's a real pearl."

"First time kong naka-encounter na isang perlas na mula sa talaba. And it's actually rare dahil most of the pearls are actually spherical or pabilog, " he added.

Jewel Crisostomo, a licensed gemologist in Manila also did a chemical test on the pearl.

The gemologist found that there was calcium carbonate in the stone, which meant that what Raoul found was indeed a pearl!

According to Jewel, pearls that are natural and not cultured has a lot of value. The tiny pearl that Raoul found is worth around P20,000 to P30,000!

A special pearl anniversary

With his newfound treasure, Raoul decided to have the pearl customized into a pendant. He was going to give it to his wife for their anniversary on April 7, 2020.

But Raoul couldn't wait any longer.

Upon receiving the gift, Arlene couldn't contain her happiness. For her, it didn't matter if the pearl was real or not. The fact that her husband went through so much trouble just to give her the gift was enough.

Coincidentally, Arlene and Raoul were going to celebrate their 30th anniversary together. Thirtieth anniversaries are symbolized by pearls!

For Raoul, the price of the pearl didn't matter. To him, his 30 years of marriage to his wife is the most valuable treasure.

"So 30 years, ang symbol noon is pearl so talagang very coincidence ang nangyari na nakakuha ako ng ganoon," Raoul joyously announced.
