Robredo: American Senators Has The Right To Criticize The Philippine Government

The United States has the right to back a resolution calling on the Philippine government to drop charges against Senator Leila de Lima, and demand her immediate release from detention, Vice President Leni Robredo said on Sunday.

Robredo, a party mate of de Lima in the opposition Liberal Party, also noted that Filipino officials could not stop their US counterparts from doing what they want.

“Iyon, karapatan nilang gumawa ng suhestiyon; karapatan din natin na magdesisyon. Pero para pigilan natin sila sa pagpasa nito, wala din iyon sa ating kapangyarihan,” she said on her radio show, “BISErbisyong Leni.”

(It is their right to make a suggestion; it’s also our right to make a decision. But for us to stop them from passing it, that is not in our power.)

“Kasi nasa kanila naman iyon kung anong gusto nila…‘di ba… kung anong polisiya iyong gusto nilang itulak,” Robredo, who is the chairperson of LP, stressed.

(Because it is up to them on what they intend to do…right…what policies they want to push.)

The Vice President was asked by her co-anchor Ely Saludar to comment on US Senate Resolution 142 that declared de Lima a “prisoner of conscience, detained solely on account of her political views and the legitimate exercise of her freedom of expression.”

The resolution, authored by Senators Dick Durbin and Edward Markey, was passed by the U.S Senate Foreign Relations Committee last week.

It also condemned the “harassment, arrest, and unjustified judicial proceedings” against journalists, particularly online news outfit Rappler and its head Maria Ressa.

The resolution also covered officials and security forces responsible for the extrajudicial killings linked with the government’s war on drugs.

According to Robredo, the resolution showed the resolve of some U.S senators to “put premium on human rights and the rule of law.”
