Duterte visits cancer-stricken children

As part of a long-held personal tradition, President Duterte visited children with cancer at the Southern Philippines Medical Center-Children Cancer Institute (SPMC-CCI) last Friday without the media in tow.

It is a habit that he finds so hard to break as he makes sure that everyone finds joy in the toys, cash gift, food and “Christmas hug” that he gives for the holidays.

Children who suffer from cancer are so close to the President’s heart that he is fully supporting the operation of the House of Hope, a temporary home for children with cancer.

A project of the Davao Children’s Cancer Fund Inc., the House of Hope has served about 5,000 children and caregivers since its inauguration in August 2007.

President Duterte talks to a pediatric cancer patient during his visit to the Southern Philippines Medical Center Children’s Cancer Institute in Davao City on Saturday.

The House of Hope decreased treatment abandonment and provided a clean and healing environment for children with cancer. It is aimed at bringing hope, promoting better survival rates and achieving an excellent and holistic care for children with cancer.

It strives to provide the children with cancer better access to treatment through adequate preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic facilities; promote psychosocial and spiritual support; and environmental protection.

Duterte, who was accompanied by Sen. Christopher Go, has donated separate structures for the House of Hope at the SPMC compound.
