Experts Warn of Outbreak of Incurable Virus Spread By ‘Giant’ Mosquitoes As Big As A Coin

Just when you thought that things couldn’t get any worse with the Wuhan outbreak and the Australian bush fires, there may just be a new danger lingering on the horizon as reported by The Daily Mail.

As if the continent itself can’t catch a break with fire and floods, experts are now warning that Australia may be on the cusp of an outbreak of an incurable disease.

Yes, you heard that right, an outbreak of an incurable disease, right on the heels of the Wuhan epidemic. Called the Ross River Virus, the virus itself is spread typically by mosquitoes that are infected with it, and unsurprisingly, giant mosquitoes carrying the disease have been discovered in increasing numbers in Australia.

How big are these insects, you ask? Well the blood-suckers are as large as a coin, and are called elephant mosquitoes. Sightings of these dangerous insects have been found near the Gold Coast in Queensland at Coombabah, Paradise Point and Biggera Waters. This has prompted an alert in Queensland, where the largest number of the infected mosquitoes has been sighted.

Almost five times the size of a typical mosquito, Gold Coast Councillor Cameron Caldwell has said that the area suffered ‘plague proportions’ of the giant mosquitoes. Fogging of the affected areas have been conducted, but it remains to be seen how effective they are in killing off the mosquitoes.

While the Ross River Virus is not lethal, it is incurable and will lead to persistent joint inflammation and pain, fatigue and muscle aches. Many infected people also develop a rash of variable appearance.

Griffith University disease ecologist Eloise Skinner told the Gold Coast Bulletin the conditions present in the region now are right for a serious outbreak to occur, based off on the increase of numbers in mosquitoes as well as the movements in weather.

We definitely hope that an outbreak doesn’t happen, and that Australians would keep safe, given all that they have had to go through!
