Malacañang said workers should not worry about not going to work amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, saying the Palace will talk to their bosses on their behalf.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made the statement after learning of instances where employers are forcing their workers to come to work despite the community quarantine being imposed in Metro Manila.

In his Monday press briefing, Panelo said he was able to talk to someone who was “scared” to go work because he might get the disease.

“Tinanong ako ano’ng gagawin, sabi ko (I was asked what they should do, I said), ‘Huwag kang pumasok. Bahala na kami sa employer niyo, kakausapin namin (Don’t come to work. We’ll deal with your employers)’,” he said. “Kasi buhay mo nakataya, eh (Because your life is at stake now).”

According to Panelo, even Interior Secretary Eduardo Año spoke with some Filipinos who preferred to stay inside their homes to avoid getting the virus.

The National Capital Region (NCR) is under community quarantine until April 14 to contain the spread of COVID-19. While the quarantine is in effect, travel to and from Metro Manila via land, domestic air, and domestic sea are likewise suspended.

Workers, however, are exempted from the travel restrictions provided that they are able to show proof of their employment in Metro Manila.

On Monday afternoon, the government announced an “enhanced community quarantine” was imposed over the whole of Luzon, with details on its implementation to follow later today.
