Xu Ruiqin, who lives in Jiangxi, started sewing dresses for his child when she
was only 4 years old.
Xu designs the dresses, prepares the fabric and sews the garment together.

As if working on intricate ensembles isn’t challenging enough, he also does
his daughter’s makeup.

He then showcases his work by filming her and taking her photos when they
travel.

Xu taught himself how to sew using a machine passed down from his mother.

He has since used the machine to create more than 100 dresses for his
daughter.

Xu explained that he was initially worried about people finding out that he
sews dresses.
“I lived in an environment where people were not that open-minded and were not
willing to try new things. Nobody else had done this before, so I didn’t want
anybody to know that I made dresses. I was afraid they would judge me,” he
said, according to the South China Morning Post.

However, the love Xu has for his daughter simply mattered more.
“I wanted my daughter to remember the places we had been to and the things we
did together, and give her some wonderful childhood memories,” he said.
With some encouragement from his brother, Xu eventually decided to share his
work online, breaking gender stereotypes.
Over time, he also began sharing more of his creative process, responding to
questions about design, tailoring and other matters from his viewers.

The fabrics and materials Xu uses were relatively inexpensive, according to
Sina News. Despite this, he strives to create the best ensembles for his
daughter.
So far he has sewn traditional costumes, Japanese Lolita dresses and even a
wedding gown, to name a few.

Xu has since earned the title “Tailor Father” among his fans. He currently
runs a Douyin account (username @徐睿卿的黑色日记).
Xu also has a YouTube channel, but it features him working more on origami
pieces. This clearly adds to his list of creative talents.
