Speaker Alan Cayetano has accused the local broadsheet, The Daily Tribune, of spreading fake news about President Rodrigo Duterte’s marching orders on his term-sharing deal with Marinduqe Rep. Lord Velasco.
Cayetano was upset over a Tribune “breaking news” on Twitter proclaiming Velasco as the “new” Speaker just minutes after Duterte wrapped up his meeting with Cayetano and Velasco in Malacanang.
In a privilege speech Wednesday, Cayetano said: “Nasa kotse pa lang ako, hindi ko pa nakakausap ang mga mahal ko sa buhay, ‘di ko pa nakakausap y’ung mahal kong mga Kongresista, nasa oposisyon man o administrasyon, nag-text brigade na na may halong fake news.”
“ Di naman po ako nagulat d’un sa Tribune, kasi nabanggit ko na po sa ating Pangulo, ‘Mr. President, si Cong. Velasco ang PR n’yan ay si Willie Fernandez ng Tribune. Umpisa pa lang ng SEA (Southeast Asian) Games ginugulo na ako n’yan at kung anu-anong black propaganda (ang pinapakalat),” he added.
Cayetano claimed that part of Duterte’s marching order was for him to make the announcement himself in Congress and that he would stay until the House passed the 2021 budget.
“I went into the meeting trusting the wisdom of the President. Just like in 2019 July, agreements again were made last night, and just like in previous instances, they were immediately broken by Congressman Velasco,” said Cayetano.
But Presidential Legal Adviser Salvador Panelo revealed that the President was adamant that Velasco take over on October 14, before Congress went on recess, when “hopefully, the 2021 budget has already been approved in the House.”
