Young Filipino Speedcuber posts World-Record feat by solving Rubik’s cubes under 6 seconds

Young Filipino speedcuber Sean Villanueva has set a world-record performance after posting a 5.98 seconds average in the 3x3x3 Cube event in Marikina City.

According to a report, Villanueva’s recent performance in the Marikina City Open II 2019, a World Cube Association (WCA) sanctioned competition, is his first-ever Asian Record that made him the “only third person in the world in cubing history to register a sub-6seconds average.”

The 11-year-old speedcuber posted an Asian Record after solving his Rubik’s Cube 3x3x3 puzzle with 7.67, 5.72, 5.99, 5.52, 6.23 that resulted to a 5.98-second average.

It was further reported that the Grade 6 student from Ateneo de Manila University also became the first Asian to post such feat, which made him rise to World no. 3 in the global rankings of the speedcubing’s most prestigious event.

“I didn’t expect this. 5.98 average!” Villanueva said on Facebook after sharing a photo of his Asian Record.

His victory came after finishing as the runner-up in the World Championship in July, the report said. With this achievement, he also erased the current 6.37 Asian Record owned by fellow Filipino speedcuber Leo Borromeo of Cebu.

With his performance, Villanueva joined two other international speedcubers, who have an under-6 seconds record, namely Australia’s Feliks Zemdegs, who owns a 5.69 seconds average; and United States’ Max Park, who has a record of 5.83 seconds average.
