Mixed Tears: After Winning Gold, Indonesian Wushu Athlete Receives News of Father's Death

Winning the golds for men's Gunshu and Daoshu events of Wushu yesterday came as a bittersweet moment for Indonesian Edgar Xavier Marvelo.

People in his team were in tears after his victory and those were not just tears of joy. Edgar's father died while he was competing in the event and he was only informed about it after winning the gold, bringing him to tears.


Despite grieving on the death of his father, Indonesia's Wushu athlete, Edgar Xavier Marvelo managed to maintain a strong performance by snatching another gold medal in individual Taolu Daoshu/Goshu number and group Dullian number, giving him 2 gold medals in total.

Indonesian wushu athlete Edgar Xavier Marvelo bit his gold medal after winning the men's Wushu Gunshu match at the World Trade Center Building in Manila on Tuesday during the 2019 SEA Games.


Edgar top-scored in the event with 9.68, winning gold over his rivals, Singaporean Si Wei Jowen L. and Vietnam's Xuan Hiep Tran.
