Calm down, Pinoys. You’re probably missing Reno Liver Spread by now, but the decades-old food product may soon make a comeback– if it gets a license from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
FDA Director-General Eric Domingo told ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo yesterday that Reno’s manufacturer has said sorry for failing to get a license, and is now in the process of obtaining one.
“They wrote to us and apologized because they weren’t able to have their product registered,” Domingo said in English and Filipino.
He said that Reno’s maker has a license to operate, which they applied for three years ago.
“They registered in 2017 to get a license to operate as a manufacturer of food. Their factory passed [the test] and we advised them to [have their product] registered but they weren’t able to do so,” he explained.
“What I know is that they already submitted their application for registration the other day. We’re just waiting for them to complete the requirements. As long as these requirements are complete, the FDA will quickly approve [their application],” he added.
As of now, the product cannot be sold until it passes a series of tests, which will determine if Reno contains harmful ingredients.
Sold since 1958, Reno is a staple in many Pinoy households and is often used as the main ingredient in stews such as caldereta and menudo. FDA’s announcement about the unregistered product was met with much rage and humor, with the public joking that it should be the government agency that should apply for a license from Reno instead. Some Filipinos have said, however, that the unexpected publicity has been beneficial to the brand.
