Next month, President Joe Biden will welcome Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to the White House for talks, in an effort to further strengthen relations with the Pacific nation.
On Thursday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the meeting, scheduled for May 1, will focus on a range of topics including deepening economic cooperation, climate change, human rights, and promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
This visit follows the announcement earlier this year by the Philippines that it will allow U.S. forces to expand their presence in the Southeast Asian nation, as part of a broader effort by the U.S. administration to strengthen its military alliances in the Indo-Pacific region, in anticipation of potential confrontations with China, including over Taiwan.
Biden and Marcos previously met in person in September, on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. Marcos, who is the son and namesake of the country's former president, assumed office last June.
