Duterte declares National Bible Day as a Special Working Holiday 🇵🇭 ~SHARE

President Rodrigo Duterte declared the last Monday of January a special working holiday, in observance of National Bible Day, as per CNN Philippines post.

Duterte signed Republic Act 11163 on December 20 last year, instilling the holiday as part of government's mandate "to aid and encourage the development of the moral character and spiritual foundation of the Filipino people."

The chief executive signed Republic Act 11163 or “An Act Declaring The Last Monday of January Every Year as a Special Working Holiday in Observance of National Bible Day” on Monday” on December 20 last year.

“As a predominantly Christian nation and the largest Christian nation in the Asia Pacific, this Act recognizes the value of the Holy Bible as the core of Christian faith.

“The last Monday of January and every year thereafter is hereby declared as ‘National Bible Day’ and proclaim the same as special working holiday.”

The Act makes all laws, presidential decrees, executive orders, issuances, rules and regulations and any part thereof regarding national non-working holiday inconsistent with its provisions are repealed or modified.

It also stated that it is the policy of the state that the government shall aid and encourage development of the moral character and spiritual foundation of the Filipino people.

The law was passed by the Senate as Senate Bill No. 1270 on February 5, 2018 and was adopted by the House of Representatives as an amendment to House Bill No. 7544 on October 10, 2018.

Senator Manny Pacquiao authored and sponsored the Bill; noting the provision of the 1987 Constitution which calls on government “to support efforts to strengthen the ethical and spiritual values and to develop the moral character and spiritual foundation of every Filipino.”

Pacquiao said the bill is necessary for the betterment of the Philippines via God-centered governance and people-centered services.

His measure, he said, calls for all Christians to unite altogether and celebrate the Holy Bible as the cradle of human faith.
