Guy Wants to Change Careers after Learning How Much a Lumpia Vendor Earns

The minimum wage in Manila is set at over Php500 but is less than Php600. But even counting the amount as Php600 and assuming the person works every single day of the month, with no days off, his earnings would only be at Php18,000 for a month.

Factor in mandatory deductions like taxes and SSS/GSIS payments, expenses like transportation and food, and other things to pay for, such as work clothes, shoes, makeup, etc., a worker is left with a much smaller take-home pay.

Of course, a lot of people earn over the minimum wage, especially in Manila; however, getting a higher salary often means having long years of experience, better qualifications like a Master’s Degree perhaps, more talent, and other factors.

The Lumpia Vendor

Jomer Arañas joked that he wants to shift careers after he discovered how much a lumpia vendor earns.

Chatting up with the lumpia vendor, Jomer discovered that the guy often gets his lumpia sold out – and he sells about 600 per day! With the lumpia costing Php20 per 3 pieces, Jomer did the math and was surprised that it came up to Php4,000 a day for work that does not even reach 8 hours!

If he sells on a daily basis, this lumpia vendor earns as much as Php28,000 per week! That’s bigger than what minimum wage earners get in NCR. In a month, he has Php120,000 – now, that’s a dreamy amount, huh?

But netizens cleverly pointed out that Jomer forgot to deduct the expenses that Manong Lumpia Vendor spent in making the lumpia. Buying the ingredients, cooking the fillings, and packing up or wrapping the lumpia would take him several hours per day; those should be considered when counting for his actual net income.

Still, even if he spends 60% on the ingredients and other expenses like fare/transportation to reach his customers, this lumpia vendor would still be earning about Php1,600 per day, around Php11,200 a week, or still a huge amount of Php44,800 per month!

So, who wants to shift careers with me and become a lumpia vendor? BRB! Got to Google lumpia recipes… LOL.
