2019 SEA Games Torch inspired PH National Flower ‘Sampaguita’

The Philippines’ national flower known as ‘sampaguita’ is about to gain another global attention in this year’s SEA Games.

A report from GMA’s 24 Oras confirmed that the sampaguita flower has been chosen by the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) as the official design for the ceremonial torch in the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

The sampaguita-inspired torch was conceptualized and designed by a talented Filipino metal sculptor Daniel Dela Cruz, who spent a year to make it out of alloy and wood.

Overall, it weighs 1.5 kilos. Its pattern also includes the 8-rayed sun from the Philippine flag.

In his interview with 24 Oras, Dela Cruz explained why he chose to use sampaguita in his design.

“Actually, it is a very humble flower. Maliit lang siya pero ang mapapansin mo ‘yung resilience ng sampaguita ay kakaiba,” he said. “Nilalako iyan sa kalsada o sa simbahan. Noong araw hindi na nakakabit sa kaniyang stem pero hindi siya nalalanta. Nagtatagal pa ng isang araw sa iyong bahay.”

Dela Cruz also emphasized the distinct Filipino characters that the sampaguita flower represents. According to him, he chose sampaguita because it symbolizes the beauty, humility and strength of the Filipinos.

The start of the ceremonial torch relay will be on October 30 which will be held in Davao City. It will then proceed to Cebu and end in Luzon.

The torch will also be used in the opening ceremonies of the 2019 SEA Games to light up the cauldron.
