Filipino High School Student Invents Robot that Picks Up & Sorts Out Trash

A high school student from Abra has developed a robot that picks up and sorts out trash.

Through pure passion and talent, 16-year-old Meljon Reyes Viste, was able to develop the robot using functional artificial intelligence.

According to a report, the Grade 10 student at Abra High School showed interest in putting together robots and Lego toys when he was still a child. His talent in assembling toys and robots eventually led to creating the robot that picks up and sorts out trash. It was all on his own, without actual education on robotics.

“I want to do something that is useful. I am worried with the state of our environment that is why I improved what had been developed in the past,” Viste expressed; adding that as an inquisitive kid, he used to question why robots do not move.

That question then fueled him to explore and learn more about robots.

Then, the great opportunity to use his talent on a project came when their school required them to do research and propose possible solutions to address problems in their province.

“I got curious about what benefits can such robot give to the environment, what can it do for us so I did some interventions,” Meljon said in the PNA report.

His idea to develop a robot that picks up and sorts out trash was then born.

The robot, which is about four feet high, has been showcased by Viste in a national competition and is set to join an international contest in Australia this October using an improved version of the robot.

He also revealed that a representative from a big Philippine corporation noticed his invention and offered to buy it but he refused because for now, he treats it as his hobby.

It was reported that Viste won third place when he joined the World Robot Games Championship in Thailand last August where he showcased another invention.
