Social media nowadays are the main medium for expressing your thoughts and feelings. Sharing thoughts and memories of people which are the so-called netizens are infact the primary role of social media in their lives.
Because of this freedom of speech, there are also people who spread malicious intentions and CHISMIS through social media.
This is a fair warning to everyone who enjoys spreading rumors on Facebook: a female vendor in Cebu was sent to jail due to the gossip she allegedly spread on Facebook messenger. According to the news from a concerned Facebook user, the said woman is currently facing charges of cyber libel and has to pay ₱10,000 for her bail bond.
The alleged suspect was caught in Bantayan, Cebu. She allegedly used the app to send deteriorating words to the victim.
Cyber libel is a crime! The best describes this moment when a woman who got jailed and faced up to 12 years of jail time because of alleged spreading CHISMIS on Facebook.
If you are not aware, cyber libel is now considered a crime in the country.
Under Article 353 of the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines, libel is defined as a public and malicious imputation of a crime, vice or defect, real or imaginary or any act, omission, condition, status or circumstance tending to discredit or cause the dishonour or content of natural or judicial person or to blacken the memory of one who is dead.
According to Sen. Loren Legarda, author of the said bill, the previous penalty for cyber libel is ₱200 and 30 days of imprisonment. But on this new law, the penalty was raised to “incriminatory machination”, from 6 days up to 6 months of imprisonment or 6 months up to 12 years in jail.
In addition to this, Article 364 of Revised Penal Code or the so-called Intriguing Against Honor is about spreading CHISMIS or false information.
If proven guilty, the suspect may pay the fine up to ₱50,000 plus 6 years in prison.
So now, you better think before you click to avoid these charges.
