Ash Wednesday To Continue With “No Contact” Involved

ASH WEDNESDAY – According to the Archdiocese of Manila, the Ash Wednesday tradition will continue with certain compromises.

Traditionally, a priest would mark a cross on a devotee’s forehead with ash. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Vatican ordered a “no contact” protocol.

So, instead of this tradition, Bishop Broderick Pabillo, the apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Manila said:

Galing sa Vatican, nagkaroon ng instruction at ganun din sa CBCP na sa Ash Wednesday, sa halip na ilagay sa noo ay bubudburan na lang ng abo ang kanilang mga ulo. Wala nang contact. Lalapit sila at bubudburan ng abo ang kanilang ulo

Pabillo explained the method they’d use amid the pandemic would still be akin to that of the olden era. He said that before, when men sinned, they would place ash on their heads. “Kapag sila ay nagsisisi, naglalagay sila ng abo sa kanilang ulo, naliligo sa abo”, he added.

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of the tradition. Pabillo noted the saying “from ashes to ashes”. During an interview with ABS-CBN’s TeleRadyo, he said:

At ‘yung formula na sinasabi na ikaw ay tao, tandaan mo sa abo ka babalik, magsisi ka sa iyong mga kasalanan… ‘yan po ay sasabihin na lang ng minsanan sa lahat.
