Mark Sheehan, the lead guitarist for Irish rock band The Script, has died following a "brief illness," the group shared on social media Friday. He was 46.
"Much loved husband, father, brother, band mate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness. The family and group ask fans to respect their privacy at this tragic time," the band's official Instagram page wrote alongside a photo of Sheehan.
The Script formed in Dublin in 2001 and included Sheehan, lead singer and keyboardist Danny O'Donoghue and drummer Glen Power. The band is known for 2012's "Hall of Fame," 2009 track "Before the Worst" and 2008's hit songs "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" and "Breakeven."
"It's his story to tell, but yeah, I guess if I could paraphrase, his children needed a father and his wife needed a husband," lead vocalist and keyboardist O'Donoghue told the outlet. "He took a little bit of time off. You get refreshed, then you come back with a new zest for life. And I believe it was the best thing that could have happened for all of us."
The band was set to tour with Pink for her Summer Carnival Tour in the coming months. "This is gonna be EPIC," The Script said about the tour on Instagram in January.
"This is devastating! Such a beautiful, nurturing warm-hearted guy! I’m so sorry!" wrote singer JP Cooper.
"This is so heartbreaking. I am so sorry guys. He was the loveliest human. Sending so much love to you all," singer Kamille commented.
